Father arrested in connection with death of 2-year-old daughter shot in Northwest Baltimore - Baltimore Sun

Baltimore Police arrested a 28-year-old man on murder and child abuse charges Wednesday in connection with the Sunday evening shooting death of his 2-year-old daughter.

Police said in a news release that investigators determined Christopher Gamble “was responsible for the shooting death” of Charlee Gamble, the 2-year-old girl who was shot and killed Sunday in Northwest Baltimore.

In charging documents, police wrote that Christopher Gamble told homicide detectives that he had left a gun he purchased “off the street” on the TV stand in his bedroom, where Charlee was before she suffered a gunshot wound to the head.

During two interviews in which police said Gamble “gave conflicting accounts” of that night’s events, the father “implied that his daughter shot herself” and later “confirmed that he was in the bedroom with his daughter when she was shot.” The court documents do not say who fired the gun.

Police said earlier this week that officers responded at about 7:10 p.m. Sunday evening to a hospital for a report of a young child with a gunshot wound. The girl was shot at Gamble’s residence in the 6000 block of Park Heights Avenue in the Glen neighborhood, police said Wednesday.

Gamble drove his daughter, who was less than a month from her third birthday, to Sinai Hospital, where he handed her to medical staff before driving away, police wrote. He returned later in different clothing with the mother of his child.

A witness told investigators that during that car ride, the father had said, “I have to die. … It was my fault,” according to charging papers, in which the witness’s identity is redacted.

Doctors at Sinai, who initially told officers they “didn’t feel as if this child will make it through the night,” declared Charlee dead soon after 8 p.m., police wrote.

No firearms were found in the residence, and no guns or blood evidence were found in Gamble’s vehicle, according to police, who wrote that Gamble told a detective that he “doesn’t know what happened to the gun or where it is currently.”

Gamble was taken to Central Booking on Wednesday and charged with a total of 12 counts, including several firearms offenses as well as child abuse and first- and second-degree murder and assault. He also charged with evidence-tampering.

No attorney information for Gamble was available Wednesday in online court records. A court commissioner ordered him held without bail, according to court records. He did not yet have a bail review before a judge scheduled as of Wednesday afternoon.

After the shooting, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott called for a look at “the adults around that child” in the investigation, saying that “there is no way on earth” that the toddler should have died from a gunshot she suffered “in a place full of people that loved that young person.”
