Benton man arrested in connection with Fairfield murder - WGME

FAIRFIELD (WGME) -- Maine State Police says a Benton man has been charged with murder in the death of a man from Fairfield.

Police say they were called to 247 A Main Street in Fairfield around 3:38 p.m. Tuesday.

A friend found the body of 62-year-old Edwin Weeks of Fairfield when he stopped by to check on him.

During the investigation, detectives tried to stop a vehicle driven by 22-year-old Raheem Shamar Goodwin of Benton.

Police say Goodwin was headed towards Canaan on Route 2 when he intentionally drove into a ditch.

Officers say he barricaded himself in the vehicle before setting the interior on fire.

Goodwin was arrested after he exited the vehicle.

He was taken to Somerset County Jail early Wednesday morning for a bail violation and an eluding charge.

On Wednesday, an autopsy determined that Weeks died of sharp force trauma.

Goodwin was charged with murder on Friday.

Police say the two were familiar with each other.

The investigation is ongoing.
