SAN JOSE — A high school volleyball coach was arrested Monday on suspicion of sexually abusing a minor, according to authorities.

Jared Washington was arrested in San Jose and booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on a felony count of lewd and lascivious acts on a minor, aged 14 or 15,  the San Jose Police Department said in a news release.

Washington is currently working at Overfelt High School in San Jose and was previously a coach at Independence High School, Evergreen High School and Stingray Volleyball Club, police said.

A girl reported Feb. 1 that she was in an “inappropriate relationship” with Washington when she was on the Stingray Volleyball Club between 2012 and 2015, according to police.

Detectives also discovered other possible victims and witnesses, who told police that they were subjected to similar “inappropriate activities” and grooming during the same time period, authorities said.

Overfelt High School and Stingray Volleyball Club didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment. Washington’s current employment status at Overfelt is unknown.

Police have advised anyone with more information regarding the case to contact Detective Michelle Zanotto at 408-537-1379 or 3657@sanjoseca.gov.
