2 teens arrested in connection with shooting outside Boston high school that injured teacher, student - MassLive.com

Two teenagers have been charged in connection with a shooting outside a Boston high school earlier this month that injured a teacher and a student.

A 17-year-old boy from Lynn and a 16-year-old boy from Dorchester were arrested this week in connection with a shooting outside TechBoston Academy in Mattapan that happened on March 15., Boston Police said.

A 31-year-old teacher who the Boston Teachers Union identified as Khelmon Bethel and a 17-year-old student suffered non-life threatening injuries from gunfire while on a fan bus that was bound for a basketball game.

“While on scene during the shooting officers learned that two unidentified male suspects had fled the area together on a single scooter,” police said in a press release.

The 17-year-old suspect was arrested on Wednesday following a “brief foot pursuit,” in which authorities recovered a loaded handgun, police said. After a search warrant was executed, authorities found another handgun equipped with a laser sight in the suspect’s home.

The 16-year-old suspect surrendered himself on Saturday without incident, police said.

Both are charged as juveniles.

The 17-year-old suspect has already been arraigned in Dorchester Juvenile Court, authorities said, on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, carrying a loaded firearm, two assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon and discharging a firearm with 500 feet of a dwelling.

The 16-year-old suspect will face the same charges, authorities said, when he’s arraigned in Suffolk County Juvenile Court.

Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden praised police in solving the a case like this that he says “shakes a school community—and the larger community—to its core.”

“In talking to students and staff at TechBoston I came away convinced of their strength and resiliency. Now, thanks to superb work by Boston Police, the Office of Safety Services, and prosecutors from my office, they can gather again knowing that those responsible for this reckless act are in custody and will be held accountable. The fact that both defendants are juveniles makes this incident all the more sad and makes us all the more resolved to target the flow of guns onto our streets,” Hayden said in a statement.
