North Versailles man charged in connection with fatal shooting of brother - TribLIVE

A North Versailles man remained in Allegheny County Jail on Wednesday on charges that he fatally shot his younger brother during a scuffle.

Allegheny County Police charged Andrew Scott Zevola, 36, with criminal homicide on Oct. 26, the same day he shot and killed Sheldon Zevola in a Della Drive apartment, according to a criminal complaint in the case.

North Versailles police and EMS were called to the apartment at 1:16 p.m. that day and found Sheldon Zevola suffering from a gunshot wound and unresponsive, the complaint said.

White Oak EMS unsuccessfully performed life-saving measures, and pronounced him dead at the scene at 1:26 p.m., the complaint said. Sheldon Zevola was 31, according to an obituary online.

Andrew Zevola was taken into custody inside the apartment.

Andrew Zevola told police that Sheldon Zevola came to the apartment earlier and had been involved in an altercation with Andrew’s girlfriend, the complaint said. An argument involving a cellphone “escalated into a physical fight.”

During the fight, the brothers both reached for Andrew Zevola’s .40 caliber handgun, which was sitting on the dining room table, Andrew Zevola told police.

While Sheldon Zevola was on top of his brother, punching him, a gunshot went off but did not hit anyone, the complaint said.

Andrew Zevola then “pulled the handgun into his body with control of the trigger,” the complaint said. Police said another gunshot was fired with “Sheldon’s hand wrapped around the slide of the handgun.”

“I told you I was going to shoot you (expletive),” said Andrew Zevola, according to the complaint. He then placed the gun on the dining room table and went into the kitchen.

Andrew Zevola stayed in the kitchen and never checked on Sheldon Zevola after he shot him, the complaint said. Marie Zevola, whose relationship to the brothers is unclear in the criminal complaint, then called 911.

Zevola was denied bail Oct. 27, court records show. His attorney is not listed in those records.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Friday.
